Salt Dough Christmas Ornament

It's almost Christmas Day and I am super EXCIIITTTEEDD!

We're about to go on a trip so I'm as busy as an ant these days, with all the packing (for 4), organizing baggage with airlines, doing myriad chores and trying to set up the Christmas tree for this particular blog. Around this time last week, i was so undone that I felt like pulling out all of my hair! Thankfully, it's settling down and coming together now.

Have you heard about Salt Dough? As it's aptly named, it's a dough made up of flour, water and salt instead of sugar. It's so simple to make, just mix all the ingredients, knead until smooth, shape, leave for a day or two to dry it up a little and bake it for 2 hours in a 100 degree C oven.

Salt Dough Recipe:

1/2 cup warm water

1/2 cup fine salt

1 cup plain flour

1tsp vinegar (an option for whiter dough)

Your dough should look like this after shaping. The idea is to dry it out as much as you can so it won't get soft afterwards.

I used Christmas themed cookie cutters for the obvious reason. After drying and baking, you can now paint it to seal, so the moisture outside won't soften the dough. You can paint, sprinkle, glue any design you like. Here are some of the supplies I used in decorating the salt dough:

After painting...

Yep, I've got me an Elf.

I want it pale and glittery, and there she goes...

.

Now, the FUN part begins... hanging it all up!

For the Christmas Tree, I decided to break tradition and let RED have a rest. She's so busy year after year with no complaints. "So yes, RED, you can put your feet up and sit through this season, no house duties for you, thank you". :))

I love the idea of using BLUSH and COPPER for this tree. I've been fixated with copper for a while now (especially in kitchen utensils). And with the PANTONE color for 2016 which is ROSE QUARTZ = YEY!!! goes double for me.

I used soft tulle fabric to swirl around the tree. I love how it turned out, the tree looks like it's swathed in cotton candy.

To add more texture, i used wooden letters- JOY, painted in white. You can have NOEL, MERRY or CHRISTMAS in cardboard letters as an option.

Some details around the tree.....

Someone here wants to say "Hi" in her merriest face....

Her name is "August After" but we call her Andi,

...and she's fond of eating Christmas balls...

I had her in a death grip because she's sooo all over the place.

That's it guys, i hope Andi and I made you smile.

Till next....

xoxo
