"Get Cozy" Wood Crate
Do you notice that it’s now getting dark outside even if it’s only past 5:00 o’clock in the afternoon? Yep, winter is coming, or in our case hurricane season has come! Yikes! God forbid! But anyways, the air is getting cooler. I find myself pulling out knee socks because my legs get achy at night from the cold. I’m also fond of throw blankets and pillows in the living room which I use to cover my legs anytime of the day while I’m fat-assing in the couch. So yes, I need a big enough container to “contain” my good-snuggle stuff.
I was searching our house for said container, and I happen to glance at a stock of hard wood that we have from last summer’s demolition job. Now I’m getting lucky. Wood pallets and wooden crates are so current that I too was unable to resist its charm. I mean what’s not to like? They’re gorgeous, unassuming and feels warm and comfortable. I asked a carpenter to cut and nail the wood together 'coz hot-damn, they are so tough!- as hard woods are supposed to be. The local name of the wood is “lawaan”, I salvaged it from a floor of an almost a century-old house. Generally, I’m not a fan of overly colored- wood, mahogany and chestnut does not grab me. I like blond, ash or brown-colored wood, so yes, lawaan fits me well and good, thank you.
A peak at a pile from the demo.
After being cut and nailed together…
Now, I don’t like it lacquered or finished slick and glossy. I just want some good old wax. Wax is elegant, it’s not shiny and showy. It has class. I’m not saying that Chinese furniture are tacky, it has its merits but for this project I want wax.
I wiped it clean, sanded and waxed. I used sand paper then applied wax, let dry, sanded and waxed again for at least 4 times….
There were so many available choices in the hardware for the handle, I was dithering between this and that...
But in the end I chose this 'coz I want the piece to be modernized, not antique-looking. What you think?
Voila!
Hope you too got cozy reading, til next… :)
