DESIGNED SPACES: Yah! or Nah....
Is having a well-designed room important? Really? I mean really?
Many of you may be asking this specific question. For a lot of people the answer is a big fat NO. Wait, just hear me out…
Until recently I was not convinced that designed spaces were important. Back when I was in college, one semester break, I went home and told my mom that I’m quitting design school. “Why?” she asked. I told her that I’ve wasted one whole semester listening about a darn chair. It’s ridiculous, I complained, one course syllabus dedicated solely for a chair?
But she didn’t let me quit, I should finish what I started, she said. Later on, I learned to appreciate those chairs, the different styles. I even impressed (I think) a set of architects when I applied for a teaching position talking about Chippendales, Hepplewhites, ball and claw foot, ladder-backs and so on.
Even after I passed the board exam, I was not convinced. Is aesthetic really necessary? Is being in a beautiful space important?
Well, maybe not. Beautiful things per se may not fulfill you. BUT being in a space that not only pleases your eye but soothes your well-being…, it’s a different ballgame.
But is it important?
Honestly, before, I didn’t care! I simply didn’t care how our house looked. I was used to the mess, dirty dishes in the sink, towels at the back of chairs, clothes on sofas, the list doesn’t end. I’m embarrassed to admit it but I was a slob back then. I hated doing anything. Even the simplest task of drinking water seems enormous because the glass is a couple of meters away from the fridge. I cooked only when it was necessary and I would not wash the dishes even if my life depended on it. I constantly needed a maid. My day sucked if the help was absent because I was forced to do all those chores. I was always searching the web for hotels, resorts, restaurants that I can escape to if I won the lottery. Huh!
Then, change was inevitable, suddenly I was tired of feeling like cr*p, to feel helpless and to depend on maids just because of a sucky floor plan. I decided to renovate just a small portion of our house because the paint was peeling off. It’ll just be the divider, I told myself, just a couple of plywood and a can of paint and I’ll be set. Boy, was I wrong! From just replacing a divider to a whole lot of spaces!
It didn’t happen overnight, I’m telling you. It was a lot of sweat, elbow grease and DIYs. But I finally made it (I’ll be documenting some it in the coming blogs).
Did I feel better? A whole lot.
Did it change me? Sure thing.
Is it important? Definitely YES! It’s necessary, If you want a healthier, balanced and more productive life that is.
I eat better, FEEL better and LIVE better (yeah, I know, just like from the TV show), but so TRUE.
I wish I can show you a picture of that divider before, but sadly I can’t. I didn’t foresee myself blogging about it. You just have to take my word for it, it was just plain ugly. It was like this:
Now, it looks like this. Ironically, the divider that started it all was a divider no more. I think it's better this way don't you? It opens up the space and i now have more counter tops for those nightly cups of joe.
Top view of said counter.
This rockscape is from under the stairs. The pebbles divide the kitchen counter (marble) from the wooden one.
I like these bins, specially because they just cost P50.00 each. They look stylish but most importantly they contain the clutter.
That's it guys, see ya :)
